The enduring nexus of corrupt political families and their powerful patrons in Pakistan has been a test in the region for 70 years. After the partition of the subcontinent British imperialism deliberately left a few unresolved issues specifically Kashmir and the Afghanistan border (Durand Line) to ensure continued conflict between the new nations.Instead of truly resolving the Kashmir and Afghan issues corrupt politicians and the establishment have used these flashpoints as a means of acquiring power and wealth. They have kept the Kashmir issue alive and engaged in a game of hostility and danger against India for decades. The army has spent billions of dollars in the name of Kashmir for 70 years fighting three wars none of which they won. They have been unable to take Kashmir or resolve the issue permanently. After the Kashmir issue festered when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan the establishment found another option to earn dollars through foreign aid. To fight the Soviets the Pakistani establishment invited Afghans into Pakistan and facilitated their involvement in the conflict using them to further American interests. After the Soviets left when the U.S. came to Afghanistan the establishment again took dollars to support counter-terrorism efforts. Even when the U.S. eventually grew weary and left Afghanistan the Pakistani establishment played the role of a facilitator utilizing the then-Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan considered this involvement an opportunity to lay the foundation for civil governance in the country’s border affairs and sought to resolve the Afghan issue through trust-building for a political and permanent solution. Many individuals had their sentences pardoned and this outcome was declared a victory of the Islamic struggle.Seeing the rapid improvement of Pak-Afghan relations during Imran Khan’s tenure the Biden administration once again changed its policy direction.Because after improving relations with Afghanistan Khan began to foster relations with other Islamic countries. His activities within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) especially his speech at the UN General Assembly drew the attention of the Biden administration. The Biden administration allegedly labeled him an “Islamic jihad leader” declared him a threat and had him removed through the local establishment. For his disagreement with American policies and his actions against the pro-American Pakistani establishment and allied political families he was declared a threat to Western interests and subsequently jailed at the behest of the West. Now as Donald Trump eyes a return to power he reportedly realizes that Biden made a mistake by leaving Afghanistan abruptly. Therefore he has allegedly developed a program to once again use the Pakistani establishment in exchange for dollars. The current Army Chief Asim Munir is claimed to have accepted this deal happily once again preparing to throw Pakistan into the same fire that General Musharraf ignited with his initial mistake after 9/11.Considering the pro-American policies of the current army chief which are perhaps even more aligned with the U.S. than Musharraf’s were Trump promoted his favorite general to Field Marshal through his loyal Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. He then allegedly ordered the Pakistani government to enact legislation in parliament to give the Field Marshal complete autonomy in internal and external decisions in Pakistan so that the services rendered in the region fully align with the wishes of external powers rather than the Pakistani people. The Field Marshal might think that by acquiring all these powers he has become extremely powerful and invincible. However he should also remember that after acquiring this absolute power he will be solely responsible for every good or bad thing that happens next.
